Weak group gives Japan every chance
The presence of co-hosts Japan in the group has deprived it of a seed and should see the Russians and Belgians struggle for top spot. Russia has emerged as a attacking force after missing qualification in 1998. Vladimir Bechastnik is the main man in front of goal for Russia with the bullets supplied by Valeri Karpin in midfield. In World Cups past Belgium has forged a reputation as a reliable performer. They always seem to qualify for the finals and then more often than not move through to the second round. Things look no different in 2002. However the Japanese will have hometown support on their side. Japan will perform solidly, basing their game around the play of midfield star Hidetoshi Nakata. They have the potential to cause an upset but there is serious doubt that they are talented or experienced enough to shift either Russia or Belgium. And that leaves Tunisia. They are fast, skillful and entertaining, but the Tunisians are in Japan for a good time, not a long time. Expect them to bow out early. |
