A New Stadium Or A Patch-Up?

If nothing else, 2008 will go down as a year of dramatic and unexpected change. Only a few months ago a seemingly unbeatable Labor Government was enjoying a booming economy and promising a new billion dollar sports stadium.

Now its successors are warning of a possible budget deficit and dropping strong hints that a new stadium is not on the cards.

The Premier's stated preference is for a gradual rebuilding of Subiaco Oval, which has prompted some furious lobbying behind the scenes.

The Boost To Credit Societies

With the global shift in financial markets, there's been an unexpected spin-off for WA's credit and mutual societies. Previously, considered risky compared with the big banks, these smaller operators are witnessing a surge in new members.

Analysts believe a number of factors could be causing the swing, including the Federal Government's decision to include the societies in its deposit guarantee scheme.

But how long will the trend continue? The volatility of international stock markets means the big banks are scrambling for depositors and local credit societies are ripe for the picking.

The Timor Leavers

With the school year nearly over, and the clean-up from schoolies week almost complete, one group of leavers returned home last night after an extended and unusual adventur, without the hangovers of their peers but with newly formed calluses.

They've spent their Schoolies Week away from the bands and parties, instead volunteering in East Timor. Leonie Harris reports.

Christmas for many is one of the most stressful times of the year. Domestic violence and suicide rates increase and families come under financial strain. On top of all that, there's also a social pressure to be and to demonstrate being happy.
