A man in a critical condition after being bashed while walking home from a party in Sydney's north

The university student was walking through a park in Marsfield about 2:00am (AEST) when he was attacked.

Ambulance Service spokesman Les Majoros says paramedics were told the man had been hit in the face with a skateboard and had fallen backwards.

"On arrival at the scene, paramedics discovered the male to be unconscious and with a closed head injury," he said.

The man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police are questioning a 21-year-old over the attack.
