Man 'stabbed couple, fled to Hong Kong'

Posted August 29, 2008 08:18:00

A 74-year-old man has been arrested in Hong Kong over the stabbing of an elderly couple in Sydney's south yesterday.

Police say the stabbing occurred in Beverly Hills about 8:00am (AEST) when a 71-year-old woman responded to a knock at her front door.

It is alleged the accused entered the house and assaulted the 71-year-old woman, before proceeding to the bathroom and attacking her 80-year-old wheelchair-bound husband.

The couple was stabbed multiple times in the back, head and chest, and both remain in a serious but stable condition at St George Hospital.

Detectives investigating the case found the man had later boarded a flight to Hong Kong, and arranged for him to be arrested upon his arrival.

Hong Kong police detained the man overnight, and he is expected to face court this morning, where Australian authorities will apply to have him extradited.
