Patter songs - tongue-twisting rhyming songs, usually for bass or baritone, that are show-pieces for some of the comic characters in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. They're not the only ones to have written patter songs though - it's an operatic tradition that began during the baroque and continues to the present day.
