Back in the late sixteenth century there was a revolution in flute-making. The Renaissance flute - a simple one-piece wooden flute with no keys and a limited range of notes - was given a conical bore, a key for the little finger of the right hand and a more ornate body made in several sections. These changes gave the flute more notes, making it fully chromatic, and also made a big difference to both pitch and volume. And the resulting instrument, the baroque flute, had a sound that was quite magical! The lower notes were beautifully expressive and mellow, and the higher notes, while sweet, were penetrating enough for the flute to be a solo instrument.
